About Us

The Birmingham Chamber Music Society was founded in 1937 to provide local musicians opportunities to perform in small ensembles.

We are the oldest continuously operating performing arts organization in the Greater Birmingham area. Our concerts now feature visiting artists recognized around the world by the most respected critics and audiences. We present four chamber music concerts annually, along with several education and outreach programs by chamber music ensembles and soloists.

We are a member of the Birmingham Music Cooperative, which provides assistance in applying for state and local funding and by posting our season program on its web site. Our Board of Directors is dedicated to building new audiences of all ages from across the entire Birmingham community.

We are a non-profit, 501(c)3 with no paid staff. Collaborations with other arts organizations, along with grant support and private sponsorships, allow us to present performances. Beginning in the 2006-2007 season, we presented our four concerts at the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center (ASC) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). This agreement gave us our first venue home and valuable assistance from the ASC staff.
Volunteer board members perform all other services necessary to the growth and success of our organization. In February 2007, we formed our first Development Committee to plan and direct all fundraising, including liasing with the Birmingham Music Cooperative and the ASC, writing grant applications, making presentations to potential donors and sponsors, and conducting private fundraising events.
